Due to TÜV regulations, play equipment at Karlsruhe Zoo has been temporarily relocated.
Karlsruhe Zoo to Renovate Toddler Playground
The city of Karlsruhe has announced plans to renovate the toddler playground located within the Zoological City Garden, one of the city's most popular excursion destinations. The playground, situated between the children's highway, the exotic house, and the large play area for older children, is due for an overhaul due to safety regulations set by the Technischer Überwachungsverein (TÜV).
The initial designs for the renovation will be presented via the city's social media channels by early August, with opportunities for feedback from the public. An on-site information event was held where children and parents could express their wishes and criticisms about the renovation plans. The city has taken this feedback seriously and plans to consider it in further planning.
Robust steel posts will provide stability, while the structures will continue to be made of natural acacia wood. The new playground will be designed to be both safe and attractive, adhering to stricter safety requirements due to the TÜV rule. The installation of the new equipment is scheduled for the winter half-year (2022-2023) and should be ready for the season 2026.
Usability for smaller children was also mentioned, particularly regarding the difficult-to-operate water pump. The city plans to publish detailed plans and modifications for the playground in accordance with TÜV safety standards on their official website or through direct contact with the administration.
For those who want to bring in their own ideas, the city encourages participation. Keep an eye out for announcements or local news from Karlsruhe’s municipal or cultural offices, or follow any community engagement or public workshop invitations potentially published by the zoo or local authorities.
The approximately 22-hectare area combines zoo, garden, and leisure facilities on one site. Admission is chargeable: 13 euros for adults, 11 euros reduced, 5.50 euros for children aged 6 to 15. Moving elements like merry-go-rounds are popular among those surveyed, while some play equipment is barely noticed. Without TÜV approval, the old play equipment cannot be used further in public spaces.
Other home-and-garden improvements could be considered for the Zoological City Garden, such as adding sensory plantings for children's exploration in the playground area. Additionally, the city invites suggestions for other lifestyle enhancements, like educational workshops or family-friendly events, to make the zoo visit even more enjoyable.
