Dortmund's Foodsharing Raises Awareness on Food Waste with 5-Ton Display
On Saturday afternoon, the Dortmund branch of foodsharing staged an awareness event about food waste on the Friedensplatz. The event, held in front of the town hall, aimed to encourage local decision-makers to tackle the issue.
The event showcased over 5 tons of food that volunteers had rescued from being thrown away by cooperation partners. Visitors could see the scale of food waste in Dortmund and learn about its value.
A 'smoothie bike' was available, allowing visitors to make drinks from the rescued fruit. Despite the absence of local representatives, the event was deemed a success due to public engagement and education. Over 400 boxes of fruits, vegetables, and baked goods were presented and given away. Each guest could fill bags with rescued food to take home.
The event was supported by the city's waste management company EDG, who provided 1000 cloth bags. Foodsharing Dortmund plans to hold similar events in the future, highlighting the importance of addressing food waste.
