Revitalized Cycling Sanctuary Near Leipzig

In the picturesque town of Zöbigker, just adjacent Lake Cospuden and Leipzig, stands the renovated "Bicycle Church," a unique summerhouse of worship. This church, managed by AG Bicycle Church and emphasized by Ingrid Diestel, is accessible from Easter to October, owing to its strategically ventilated windows.

The 'Bicycle Church' offers amenities such as bike racks, toilets, a herb garden, a Bible walk, and a minimalist sleeping quarter for two pilgrims. The church is nestled along the ancient trade route Via Imperii, originally connecting the Baltic Sea with Rome. It serves as a starting point for a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. Remarkably, the Camino de Santiago ends here as well.

Once a dilapidated ruin, the church was threatened by an organ fire in 1942, making it unsafe for visitors. Former Federal President Horst Köhler, who had sought refuge in Zöbigker with his parents during that time, was even baptized in a nearby school. Since its rebuilding in 2006, the renewed church has attracted visitors, and community members eagerly maintain the area and the church. The 300-year anniversary celebration in 2024 saw Köhler's attendance, one of his last engagements before his passing.

Plans for 2025 include various events, starting with the church serving as a rest stop during the 7-Seen-Wanderung. On May 10th, a "Day of Encounter" will take place, allowing attendees to collect plant cuttings for Mother's Day, followed by the Bicycle Festival for families a week later.

The prayer house welcomes visitors daily from 10 am to 6 pm during summer. No detail about wider availability or relations to the cycling community is available at this time.

The 'Bicycle Church' in Zöbigker, known for its industrious herb garden and revered bike racks, aligns itself with an outdoor-living, home-and-garden lifestyle, popular among the explorers and wanderers who frequent this picturesque town.
