Construction begins on Britain's initial predominantly LGBTQ+ residential community

Construction initiates on United Kingdom's inaugural housing catering primarily to the LGBTQ+ community.

In Whalley Range, South Manchester, the UK's first majority LGBTQ+ social rent housing scheme is underway. This Extra Care development, designed for individuals aged 55 and over, is a significant stride towards providing specialized, affordable housing for an often underserved demographic – older LGBTQ+ individuals.

The innovative project consists of 80 one- and two-bedroom social rented apartments, along with 40 additional affordable shared ownership apartments, housed within a low-carbon, four to five-storey brick building. The development boasts communal facilities such as lounges, treatment rooms, and landscaped gardens, which will enhance the green space on the previously vacant brownfield site of the former Spire Hospital, demolished in 2019.

The housing scheme is a joint effort between Great Places, the Russell Road Community Steering Group, Manchester City Council, and the LGBT Foundation. It is part of Manchester City Council's plan to deliver at least 36,000 new properties by 2032, of which 10,000 will be social rent.

The development was co-produced, ensuring it meets the specific needs of its community. The project addresses the concerns of older LGBTQ+ people about accessing appropriate and inclusive housing later in life.

Construction officially began in June 2025, marked by a celebratory event during Pride Month. Great Places Housing Group is the developer, with Rowlinson tasked with construction. Funding involves partnerships between Great Places, Homes England Strategic Partnership, GMCA Brownfield Housing Fund, and Manchester City Council. The project is on track for completion by Summer 2027.

This development represents a significant step forward in providing specialized, affordable housing to older LGBTQ+ individuals. It supports Manchester City Council's broader target of delivering 36,000 new homes by 2032, including 10,000 social or affordable homes, contributing to the city's expansion and social inclusion goals.

By fostering a physical and psychological place of safety and community for older LGBTQ+ people, the scheme is expected to improve quality of life and well-being for its residents while promoting diversity and acceptance in the wider area of Whalley Range. Cllr Gavin White, executive member for housing and development at Manchester City Council, considers the start of construction on the site a great moment for the city.

In summary, this innovative project is a landmark development in the UK’s housing landscape, setting a precedent for inclusive, community-focused living arrangements tailored to the needs of an aging LGBTQ+ population.

The innovative housing scheme in Whalley Range, South Manchester, will not only provide specialized, affordable housing for older LGBTQ+ individuals but also enhance the community's lifestyle with shared facilities such as lounges, treatment rooms, and home-and-garden spaces. By fostering a safe and accepting environment, this development aims to foster psychological and physical well-being for its residents and promote diversity within the wider Whalley Range community.
