In the vibrant city of Düsseldorf, a significant shift towards promoting sustainable and eco-friendly mobility is underway. Mayor Reiner Breuer has placed a strong emphasis on improving conditions for walking and cycling, with the aim of creating a lively and livable urban environment.

One of the key initiatives is the development of a "hierarchical bike network." This network, which includes bike highways, commuter routes, main routes, and smaller connectors, is designed to prioritise cycling routes and offer a more seamless and safer experience for cyclists. The city's budget for mobility measures will be strategically targeted based on the categorisation of this network.

The city has already made strides in transforming certain streets. For instance, Sebastianusstraße and Drususallee have been converted into bike lanes, providing a dedicated space for cyclists.

The Düsseldorf city administration is not alone in this endeavour. The Association for the Promotion of Future-Oriented Cities (AGFS) is a proactive partner in this mission. AGFS supports its members in planning, concept development, service, research, or communication, ensuring a comprehensive approach to shaping the city's mobility landscape.

AGFS members must demonstrate a commitment to creating future-oriented cities, and they must reapply every seven years to maintain their status. This ongoing commitment ensures that the city continues to evolve and adapt to the needs of its cycling community.

To further enhance the cycling experience, wayfinding signage for bike routes will be installed throughout the city. This will make it easier for cyclists to navigate their way through Düsseldorf's streets and find the best routes for their journeys.

In addition to the bike network, the city's mobility development concept includes a comprehensive offer of bike parking facilities and sharing options. This holistic approach aims to shape climate-friendly mobility in the future, making Düsseldorf a more bike-friendly city for all.

With these initiatives, Düsseldorf is setting a fine example for other cities, demonstrating that a commitment to sustainable mobility can lead to a greener, more livable urban environment.
