Bremen receives an additional three million euros for enhanced tree planting projects
Bremen, a city known for its green spaces, is set to increase its street tree population significantly over the next two years. The initiative, spearheaded by the Senator for Environment, Climate, and Science, aims to plant up to 500 new street trees in underserved neighbourhoods across the city.
The cost of planting and maintaining a young street tree in Bremen is estimated to be around 6,000 euros. To ensure the new trees can develop optimally, sufficiently large tree pits will be provided.
Viola Hellwag, Managing Director of Bremen's Environmental Authority, expressed her delight at the increase in the city's tree population. She stated, "Street trees provide shade, cool the urban climate, retain water, bind CO2, and provide homes for many animals."
The social indicator often reflects the tree distribution in Bremen, with socially disadvantaged districts often having less urban greenery. This initiative aims to address this imbalance and contribute to improving the living conditions for all people in Bremen.
Senator Kathrin Moosdorf, emphasising the importance of trees in times of climate change, stated, "Bremen is a green city and we want to keep it that way." She also highlighted that the funds for the tree planting will be sourced from the "Natural Climate Protection Action Program".
The new plantings will be selected based on site-appropriate and climate-adapted criteria. Some districts in Bremen have significantly fewer trees than others, and the first tree plantings are expected to be possible by the end of this year. Potential locations include Findorff and Blumenthal, where urban renewal and enhancement of the living environment are planned.

This initiative is an important step to secure and sustainably promote the tree population in Bremen. The focus of the new tree plantings will be on underserved neighbourhoods, with the aim of improving urban quality of life and greening the streets.
