Breathtaking Cityscapes of Markkleeberg: Stunning Panoramic Image Now Highlights This Lake-side Location

On Friday, May 23rd, the south side of the underpass at Markkleeberg station was adorned with a vibrant panoramic wall mural as part of the urban development project, "New Center." This collaboration between the city of Markkleeberg and Deutsche Bahn, executed by object designer Marc Knust, celebrates the region's favored leisure destinations, Markkleeberger and Cospudener lakes.

The artwork, spanning an impressive 158 square meters, 26 meters in length, and reaching up to five meters in height, now serves as an eye-catching addition to the city center. Boasting various leisure activities such as swimming, boat tours, sailing excursions, and visits to the Mining Technology Park, the mural beautifully encapsulates the region's diversity.

Speaking at the unveiling, Mayor Karsten Schütze expressed his delight, stating that the artistic transformation of the Markkleeberg S-Bahn station underpass not only attracts visitors but also strengthens the city's identity as the gateway to Leipzig's New Lakes region.

Artist Marc Knust further explained the innovative concept behind his work, noting that the mural doesn't just provide a visual representation of the region's primary attractions but also incorporates an interactive element. As pedestrians cross the motif, they temporarily become integrated into the panorama, serving as a captivating "picture-in-picture" for onlookers on the opposite side.

The project was partially funded through participation in the IHK City Offensive "Ab in die Mitte" and the associated prize money, along with resources from the "Lively Centers" funding program. This federal-state initiative enables cities to create a discretionary fund for small and large projects aimed at upgrading the city center. Financing comes from federal and state resources, municipal budgets, and third-party funds.
