Botanical Garden Expansion Completed, Without Fanfare Due to Covid-19
After a four-year construction period, the expansion of the Botanical Garden in Berlin is now complete. The second phase of the project, which began following the successful completion of the first phase in 2017, has been realised. However, unlike the grand festivities that marked the first phase's completion, the second phase was concluded without an opening ceremony, due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
The expanded square is now a seamless connection between the historic and the newly designed areas. It is accessible via a staircase from the lower section, and the entrance from Körnerstraße is now direct. The square is paved and equipped with benches, providing a comfortable space for visitors to rest and enjoy the garden's beauty.
The redesign of the entrance area at Bergheimer Straße and the expansion to a quarter square were part of the first construction phase. In the second phase, a steel pergola has been planted at the western edge of the square, similar to the one at the Bergheimer Straße quarter square. Concrete blocks on the side of the square have been used as seating opportunities, due to the approximately 40-centimeter higher location of the trees.
The coordination of the planning for the expansion of the Botanical Garden was led by Regine Jahn from the Botanical Garden and Botanical Museum (BGBM). Suggestions from the population and input from various organisations were considered in the conception of the second construction phase.
Four parking spaces on Körnerstraße and the foot and cycle path along Weingartstraße, as well as the deciduous trees on Körnerstraße, have been preserved. The pedestrian access to the Botanical Garden is separate from the operating area to prevent driving on the square.
Despite the lack of a formal opening ceremony, the completion of the second phase marks a significant milestone in the expansion of the Botanical Garden. Visitors can now explore the newly designed areas and enjoy the beauty of the garden in its entirety. However, it is with a note of disappointment that the large festivals that marked the first phase's completion in 2017 had to be cancelled this time due to Covid-19.
With the expansion now complete, the Botanical Garden in Berlin stands as a testament to the city's commitment to preserving and enhancing its green spaces for the enjoyment of all its residents and visitors.
