Bonhams' Canine Art Sale in Edinburgh Smashes Estimates, Fetches Over £430,000

An international auction in Edinburgh, Scotland, celebrated man's best friend with a sale of canine-themed artworks. The event, hosted by Bonhams, saw impassioned admirers from around the world bidding online and by phone. The sale, which honored various breeds like bulldogs, basset hounds, papillons, and poodles, smashed early estimates, bringing in over £430,000.

The sale's highlight was 'Sidi - A Poodle with a Tennis Racket', a portrait by Paul Friedrich Meyerheim, which fetched an impressive £51,200. Other notable sales included 'The New Forest Buckhounds', a large-scale 1896 sporting canvas by John Emms, which sold for £82,950. A French Bulldog portrait by Maud Earl went for £14,080, while 'Meurice of Mannerhead - A Very Fine Poodle' by Frederick Thomas Daws sold for £9,600.

The sale offered affordable items too, such as a 20th century walking stick with a carved wooden finial in the shape of a spaniel head, which found a new home for £358. Bonhams Edinburgh Picture Specialist Leo Webster attributed the sale's success to the universal love for dogs and the diverse reasons people keep them.

The sale of 250 canine-related artworks at Bonhams Edinburgh not only celebrated our love for dogs but also provided a platform for collectors worldwide to acquire unique pieces. From affordable items to high-value artworks, the sale catered to a wide range of enthusiasts, with the total sales exceeding initial estimates.
