Chatting by the Shoreline: Constanze Klar Sets Up Apocalyptic Beach Bar for Controversy-Ridden Conversations

Artisan constructs coastal tavern for "Apocalypse Discussion Termination" gathering - Beach bar constructed by action artist for "End Times Discussions"
Artist Constanze Klar (45) is constructing an ephemeral beach bar on the sandy shores of Spiekeroog island to stimulate conversations and introspection during these times of societal disharmony. "These days, many folks can barely tolerate opposing opinions," she told the German Press Agency. "Ever since the pandemic, it's become a struggle." She envisions the bar as a social hub where ordinarily incompatible individuals can exchange ideas.
Berlin-born and bred, Constanze Klar is this year's recipient of the Spiekeroog Tent Pitch Residency, an annual scholarship granted to art projects dealing with social or environmental concerns. During the residency, artists reside in a tent within the dunes, approximately three kilometers from the island's village. The residency concludes on July 4.
With repurposed cabinet wall panels, Klar intends to lead conversations on the state of our society with vacationers and residents - over some drinks, so to speak, on the shores of the East Frisian island that's on the verge of the end. "The last seconds of the world" is the title of the project.
The beach bar project forms part of her art scholarship. "Germany's current political climate, in my view, is a cause for serious concern, so it's an 'end times' atmosphere," she stated, hinting at concerns over a sharp rightward shift after the Union passed a motion on migration policy in the Bundestag, abetted by the AFD. Additionally, she is concerned about social strife, with individuals being cast out and devalued.
With the express permission of her guests, Klar will archive these bar conversations. She plans to transform these recordings into an animation featuring clay figures, which will be exhibited on the island in early July.
