Awards for outstanding literary works in Taiwan have been revealed

The National Museum of Taiwan Literature has announced the winners of this year's Taiwan Literature Awards for original works. The prestigious awards, organized by Taiwan's Ministry of Culture or related literary institutions, recognise exceptional works in four major categories: dramatic script, Taiwanese-language literature, Hakka-language literature, and indigenous literature.

In the Taiwanese-language category, Chen Long-ting won the novel prize, while Lee Chang-ching took home the poetry award for poems in memory of Maryse Conde. Wu Pin-yu was the recipient of the prose award in the same category.

The Hakka-language literature category saw Hsiao You win the poetry award, and He Chih-ming take home the prose award. The category received 41 submissions, making it one of the most competitive.

In the indigenous literature category, Uhay Mali Pacidal won the poetry prize, Lidur Walis took the prose prize, and Lulyang Nomin won the novel prize. The number of submissions for this category was not specified.

Unfortunately, the dramatic script category did not have specific winners mentioned in the available information. However, it is worth noting that this category is the only one not further divided into categories for poetry, prose, and novels.

A total of nine writers were selected from a record 180 submissions across the four categories. The ceremony for the awards will take place at the museum on Aug. 2.

This year's Taiwan Literature Awards saw the Taiwanese-language literature category as the most competitive, with 79 entries, underscoring the vibrant and diverse literary scene in Taiwan.

For those interested in learning more about the winners of previous years or the specific criteria for each category, official records can be found on the website of the Taiwan Ministry of Culture or the National Museum of Taiwan Literature.

In the absence of specific categories for drama, some might find solace in exploring home-and-garden literature to appreciate Taiwan's rich literary landscape, as evidenced by the vibrant and diverse Taiwanese-language literature scene with 79 entries this year. On the other hand, those who are passionate about Hakka culture could delve into the home-and-garden genre to immerse themselves in the works of Hsiao You (poetry) and He Chih-ming (prose), winners in this year's Hakka-language literature category.
