Aschaffenburg Joins 'Abpflastern' Initiative for Greener Urban Spaces
Aschaffenburg, a city of approximately 72,918 inhabitants, has joined the nationwide 'abpflastern' initiative. This long-term competition, organised by students, aims to promote greener urban spaces and combat climate change by replacing sealed surfaces with greenery. All citizens are invited to participate.
The city has started by unsealing and redesigning a small square at the corner of Buchenweg/Ulmenweg in Nilkheim. About 315 sqm of sealed surface was removed and replaced with a lawn, three trees, and new benches. The fountain at the square was retained during the redesign.
Participants can enter their unsealed areas into an online portal, submitting before-and-after photos for evaluation. The initiative aims to improve the urban climate and enhance the quality of life for residents. As part of the competition, a 'Star of the Month' project will be awarded each month during the season. The three winning municipalities in the categories of large city, medium-sized city, and small city will be honoured in November 2025.
Aschaffenburg's participation in the 'abpflastern' initiative is a step towards greener, more climate-friendly urban spaces. Citizens are encouraged to contribute, with their efforts recognised monthly and the best municipalities honoured at the end of the competition season.
