Arsenal Explores £500m Emirates Stadium Upgrade, Temporarily Moving to Wembley
Arsenal is exploring a major upgrade for Emirates Stadium, with plans that could see the club temporarily relocate to Wembley. The project, estimated at £500 million ($670m), aims to increase capacity and boost matchday income, inspired by Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu project.
The Gunners are considering a brief move to Wembley, similar to Tottenham's temporary stay during their stadium's construction. This would allow for significant internal changes at Emirates Stadium, including adjusting stand gradients and seating plans. The architect for these changes has not been specified yet.
The project aims to expand Arsenal's current capacity of 60,700 to match or surpass Tottenham's 62,850, potentially doubling matchday income. The cost, at £500 million ($670m), exceeds the £390m ($523m) spent on building the Emirates Stadium in 2006. The Kroenke family, Arsenal's owners, have experience in stadium construction, having overseen the 100,000-capacity SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, which will host several 2026 World Cup and 2028 Olympic Games matches.
Arsenal is not yet seeking planning permission, indicating that this project is still in its early stages. Before proceeding, the club aims to invest in other areas of the business. If approved, the expansion will maintain the stadium's outer appearance while significantly transforming its interior, potentially transforming Arsenal's matchday experience.
