Anticipated Interview with Terry Hoax Scheduled for June, 2025
Cheers to the new album, "Celebrate Nothing"! But why is it named so? Given the upbeat tone of the tracks, it seems like recording the album was a blast. Was it indeed that enjoyable?
OP (Oliver Perau): The current state of the world offers little cause for celebration. There's a lot one could despair about. But despite that, one shouldn't give up. Life needs to be enjoyed. So we're celebrating the fact that there's nothing worth celebrating.
Apart from the bassist Kai Schiering replacing Armin Treptau - something that's been a long time coming - you're now back to the lineup that led you to success. Isn't that something to celebrate?
MW (Martin "Matze" Wichary): When we stood together in the rehearsal room for the first time and tried out song ideas, there was a noticeable euphoria in the air. We rediscovered something and were able to further develop it - that was a good reason to celebrate.
Listening to the new album, one can't help but think, "Terry Hoax, it's clear". Some of the new tracks could almost be placed on older albums, like "Welcome to tomorrow" has a similar airy lightness that could have fit on "Freedom Circus", while "Circle of desire" exudes the same "Splinterproof" coolness (at least for me). The feeling of youth returns as soon as you listen. Was this intentional, or did this Terry Hoax vibe naturally reemerge through your collaboration?
OP: I think it's wonderful that you feel that way. The reason for that is Martin, who rejoined us. His return has been good for everyone. For me personally, the circle is complete because it's all started with us two.
What are your personal favorite tracks on the album and why?
MW: "The Last Call". I can hardly wait for the C-section and then the part with Mirja Panitz, who sings part of the refrain. A great text by Olli. And "Falling", because it really sounds like our beginnings. And "Meanwhile", mostly because of the text. And "Welcome to tomorrow", because the guitar at the end sounds like the soundtrack to the zombie apocalypse. And "Don't need somebody", because of "I don't know what I do, when I do what I do!" in the text and because it swings so well. Some text snippets from songs should maybe be printed on t-shirts. Honestly, all the songs are fantastic, we're really happy with our performance as a band in the studio. That wasn't always the case. I remember a producer once saying, "Do you really want to play it like that? It sounds like you're hanging your guitar out the window and shooting pool balls at it". Answer in a grumbly tone: "Ah... Yes, I do it like that... every time!". Now we know exactly what we want and can do and are therefore more open to ideas from outside as long as they're song-worthy. We were fortunate to be able to work with good people in a good environment for the current album, catering to our songs and our performance. Whenever possible, we could record in the Peppermint Park Studio. Recording in a large room is nowadays a real privilege and inspiration.
In terms of photos: Olaf Heine shot some for Terry Hoax back then, and he's since photographed everyone from Bad Religion to The Killers, Iggy Pop and Chris Cornell to Burt Bacharach, people who command respect and fame. Was photographing him for the current photos a deliberate choice to create a circle, or was it just happenstance?
OP: I did a favor for him, and we ended up doing the photo shoot with Terry Hoax. Olaf is part of our family history, as we are to his. This connection will always exist.
