Ancient stone carvings, centuries in age, are unearthed following a sand shift on a beach in Hawaii.

In the sandy shores of Waianae, Oahu, a panel of 26 ancient petroglyphs has recently resurfaced, offering a rare glimpse into Indigenous Hawaiian history and culture. These carvings, dating back at least 500 years, consist mostly of human-like stick figures and abstract shapes, some reaching up to eight feet in size [1][3][4].

First documented in 2016 and 2017 at the Pililaau Army Recreation Center—a U.S. Army site—the petroglyphs become fully visible during low tide when seasonal ocean swells shift the sands covering them [1][2]. This is the first full exposure of the entire panel since 2016 [1][4].

These petroglyphs are significant in Hawaiian history and culture, serving as physical links to the past. They reveal aspects of ancestral life, spiritual beliefs, and expressions. Some figures display male traits and intricate details such as clearly carved fingers, which are uncommon in Hawaiian rock art [3][4].

Native Hawaiian cultural practitioner Glen Kila interprets the reemergence of these carvings as a cultural message, possibly a warning about rising ocean levels and environmental changes impacting their ancestral lands [2]. The petroglyphs, therefore, serve both as historical records and ongoing symbols of connection, resilience, and stewardship for the native community.

The U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii’s Cultural Resources Management Program manages the site, balancing preservation efforts with public access, highlighting the importance of safeguarding Native Hawaiian heritage while operating active military lands [1][2].

Glen Kila, a respected cultural practitioner, believes the petroglyphs tell a story, but the exact details of that story are not yet known. One of the most intriguing figures is the largest one, estimated to be over eight feet tall, which Glen Kila suggests may represent the sunrise and sunset, a nod to the importance of natural cycles in Indigenous Hawaiian beliefs [2]. He also speculates that this figure could be the legendary folk hero and demigod Maui, who is said to have pulled the Hawaiian Islands up from the ocean's depths using his magic fishhook [2].

The petroglyphs' reemergence is attributed to a normal set of seasonal circumstances, namely the low-pressure weather systems that form in the Pacific Ocean between May and November [5]. The petroglyphs, located on U.S. Army property, are a unique and potent symbol of Indigenous Hawaiian history [6].

These ancient carvings offer a unique and fascinating look into Indigenous Hawaiian history and lore, reminding us of the rich cultural heritage that lies beneath our feet. They serve as a powerful symbol of Indigenous Hawaiian history and a reminder of who came before.

  1. The reemergence of ancient petroglyphs on the Waianae coast of Oahu not only provides insight into Hawaiian history and culture, but also serves as a poignant reminder of the impact of climate-change on home-and-garden lands and the environment.
  2. Aside from their historical significance, these Hawaii petroglyphs are a testament to the importance of nature in Indigenous Hawaiian society, given their intricate depictions of human-like figures and abstract shapes, which align closely with the principles of environmental-science.
  3. The petroglyphs may hold valuable information regarding the societal attitudes and behaviors of Indigenous Hawaiians towards climate and the environment, as Native Hawaiian practitioner Glen Kila suggests the large figure, representing the sunrise and sunset, could represent Maui, the legendary folk hero who is said to have pulled the Hawaiian Islands from the ocean's depths—a symbol of humanity's respect and connection to nature.
