Traditional Herb Bouquets of Schrobenhausen: A Century-Old Custom Continues
The Catholic Women's Association of Schrobenhausen is set to continue a centuries-old tradition, as they prepare the annual herb bouquets for the Feast of the Assumption. This year, the event will take place on August 14, with the sale of the bouquets happening both on the 14th and 15th.
A Rich History
The practice of creating herb bouquets for the Feast of the Assumption, celebrated on August 15, dates back to medieval times. In Schrobenhausen, this tradition has been preserved and continued by the Catholic Women's Association, reflecting both religious observance and community cultural events.
The Importance of the Herb Bouquets
- Religious Symbolism: The herb bouquets symbolize Mary's purity and the bounty of God's creation, which she intercedes for. Blessing the herbs during the Mass or procession invokes spiritual protection and thanksgiving.
- Medicinal and Folk Tradition: Historically, the herbs used in the bouquets (often including yarrow, chamomile, St. John’s wort, and others) were believed to have healing properties. The blessed bouquets were kept in homes to protect families from illness and misfortune.
- Community and Cultural Identity: The preparation of these bouquets fosters social bonds among the women of the association and the larger parish community, keeping alive local customs and connecting participants with their Catholic heritage.
- Continuity and Adaptation: Although the original medicinal use may have diminished, the bouquets remain a symbol of faith, nature, and cultural continuity. The Catholic Women's Association ensures that younger generations understand and participate in the tradition.
