(Get reacquainted with the old-time charm of string art, as I reveal its magic at a local crafting hotspot called DIY Bar Portland.)
I must confess; string art has engrossed me all over again! I fully acknowledge that string art isn't new to the scene and has been popular for quite some time, but a recent crafting class experience at DIY Bar Portland refreshed my enthusiasm.
(Savor the camaraderie of crafting alongside friends, lending each other support, and having the chance to pick your preferred DIY kit.)
It was a delightful experience because I had the opportunity to attend with friends, where we selected our desired project kits. It was quite intriguing to observe everyone select their unique projects, including an octopus, a mountain, and — you guessed it — a dinosaur!
(Prepare to be violently addicted, as you delve deeper into this delightful craft.)
We were immediately hooked! I eagerly awaited a suitable moment to create my own string art piece, and what better time than Christmas? I opted to use Duck Tape for the "peppermint" theme background, and a touch of the Gold Glitter type for the tree star.

Step-by-Step Christmas Tree String Art Instructions
- ** board Preparation**
- Remove the back from your frame.
- Craft or table saw the wood background to a slightly larger size (with extra room around all edges) to fit your frame snugly.
- ** Duck Tape Striping**
- Apply Duck Tape diagonally (in a zig-zag pattern) on the wood background, ensuring perfect contact and edge-to-edge butts.
- Fold the excess tape over the back of the board.
- ** Template Placement**
- Download the free tree pattern and print it out.
- Align the template on your Duck Taped board, positioning the tree whichever way you prefer.
- Adhere the template using double-sided tape or even a few strips of Duck Tape.
- ** Edge Nailing**
- Nail around the edge of the template, ensuring adequate spacing (about 1/2" - 3/4") between nails.
- Note that these nails will secure the string in place.
- ** String Starting**
- Select the first nail where you'd like to begin the stringing process.
- Unravel the embroidery floss to its entire length.
- Wrap the string along the length of the floss (about 1 1/2") without separating the strands.
- Tie a knot around the selected nail to secure the string.
- ** String Weaving**
- Start weaving the floss around the nails, criss-crossing each other as you fill the space between the nails.
- Keep weaving the string around all nails (through the holes in the nail heads), ensuring a consistent and balanced look.
- Create your desired tree shape by following the template guide.
- ** Star Placement**
- After completing the tree body, cut a Star shape from the Gold Glitter Duck Tape using a craft knife and mat.
- Stick the star atop the completed tree.
- ** Frame Installation**
- Insert the string art into the frame, making sure the back is secure.
- Tape around the edges to hold the string art in place.
