Accessible Archive: Historical Photos from Neustadt Now Available in Zeittor's Picture Collection
Neustadt's New Photo Archive Opens at Zeittor Museum
Neustadt in Holstein is set to make its more recent history more tangible with the introduction of a new photo archive at the Zeittor Museum. The project, spearheaded by museum director Frank Wilschewski, aims to make the treasures in the archive accessible to everyone.
The initiative has received a significant boost with Thomas Schwarz, a city employee and the leader of the photo club at the Zeittor, donating his vast private photo collection to the city for this project. Schwarz has already published two books of Neustadt photos and is now employed for 12 months to tackle the photo archive challenge.
The oldest photograph in the archive is from 1848 and shows Jacob Lienau. The project involves sorting through thousands of photos, cataloging them, reproducing them, and making them accessible to the public. Museum visitors will be able to browse through the photo folders and get prints of specific images to take home.
Mayor Mirko Spieckermann thanked the museum's support association for covering 100% of the project's costs, which, even with the discounted price, amount to approximately 12,000 euros. Hartmut Junge from Foto Porst has also offered to print the photos at cost price to support the project.
If you have old photo albums at home that you'd like to contribute to the archive, you can contact the Zeittor Museum directly. Inquire about their submission process, arrange a meeting or drop-off, and provide details about the albums to assist with cataloging.
For those interested, here's a sample message you could use:
Dear Zeittor Museum,
I have a collection of old photo albums that I believe could be of interest to your new photo archive. I would love to donate them or have them reproduced for the archive. Could you please provide me with information on your submission process?
I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards, [Your Name]
After arrangement, the old photo albums can be dropped off at the Zeittor or lent out for reproduction purposes. No mention of any specific images becoming available for public viewing or purchase has been made.
The Zeittor Museum is inviting everyone with old photo albums at home to contact them for potential contribution to the archive. Let's help preserve Neustadt's history together!
