Aline Abboud Steps Down from "Tagesthemen" and Takes on New Role at Federal Ministry

Aline Abboud, the renowned German journalist, television presenter, and author, has announced that she will not be returning to her role as the main presenter of ARD's "Tagesthemen" after her parental leave. Instead, she is set to take on a new challenge as the press spokesperson and head of the press office at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Born on January 23, 1988, in East Berlin, Abboud is of mixed heritage, with a German mother who worked as a pharmacist and a Lebanese father originally from Byblos, who came to East Germany to study photography. She grew up in Berlin-Pankow and first visited Lebanon as a child in 1991, fostering a deep personal connection to the country.

Abboud's career path began with studying Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Leipzig, completing a Master of Arts in 2013. During her studies, she undertook various internships with print, radio, and TV media and subsequently undertook a traineeship at the German Bundestag. In 2016, she joined the German public broadcaster ZDF, where she worked as a social media editor, editorial assistant, editor, and presenter for news formats including heute and heute Xpress. From September 2021 to January 2024, she was one of the main presenters of Tagesthemen on ARD’s primary channel, also hosting related news segments on Tagesschau24.

In addition to her work on television, Abboud has hosted a political YouTube and Facebook program called DIE DA OBEN! aimed at younger audiences, produced by funk (a joint ARD and ZDF content network), and she hosts the Middle East podcast for zenith magazine.

Regarding her authored works, Abboud has written a book titled "Barefoot in Teta's Garden," which was published at the beginning of the year. The book's details are not yet widely known, but it is expected to be an insightful addition to her journalistic contributions.

Abboud expressed her excitement about her new role at the ministry, stating, "I am looking forward to working at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and contributing to the important work they do."

As she embarks on this new chapter, Abboud becomes a mother for the first time in April 2024. Her decision not to return to "Tagesthemen" is attributed to her and her family moving their center of life back to Berlin.
