A subtly evident dance trend reminiscent of ballet

Wearing shorts in December despite the cold? You bet! If the temperature hits 60°F, I'm all about denim shorts. Can't resist my love for shorts, even in the winter months. Hanging onto them for as long as possible.

Fashion Spotlight: Caroline Joy Explores Balletcore Style

Caroline Joy, a popular fashion influencer, recently shared a new outfit lookbook on her Instagram page, @carolinejoyjoy, showcasing her unique take on the emerging fashion trend, balletcore.

Despite her typically sporty and minimal style, Joy decided to add a touch of femininity to her outfit with a pair of Aritzia Unwind Socks, featuring a balletcore aesthetic. The socks, adorned with delicate details, added a soft and graceful element to her ensemble.

Joy paired these balletcore socks with her Aritzia Coaches Jacket and Aerie Pocket Bike 5″ Shorts, creating a chic and comfortable look that is perfect for the colder months. She accessorised her outfit with a Mejuri Beaded Ring, a James Avery Foxtail Chain Necklace (18in), Jenny Bird Tome Medium Earrings, and a Chan Luu Isla Necklace.

Joy's carry-all for the day was a Washable Canvas Tote, and she completed her look with Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 Sneakers. Interestingly, Joy mentioned in a previous post that she has been exploring the idea of adding small contrasting elements to her usual style, and her choice of balletcore socks seems to be a step in that direction.

Balletcore, a fashion trend inspired by ballet aesthetics and dance attire, emphasises a chic, comfortable, and playful look. Key style elements include soft tulle skirts, pastel leotards, wrap cardigans, sheer tights, satin ballet flats or sneakers, and overall delicate, feminine details that balance elegance with versatility. This trend has gained traction especially through social media platforms like TikTok, blending traditional balletwear with street style for fresh, unique outfit ideas.

It is noted for incorporating materials like tulle and satin, focusing on comfort, inclusivity, and sustainability (e.g., recycled fabrics and dead-stock materials). Balletcore contrasts with styles like cottagecore by lending a more refined, dance-inspired elegance rather than rustic countryside looks. It has also been embraced on fashion runways and by celebrities, underpinning its growing popularity and potential longevity in mainstream fashion.

Joy, however, prefers to wear shorts as long as the temperature is above 60°F, and her choice of shorts, even in December, is a testament to her commitment to comfort and personal style. Despite her recent return to Instagram after being off it for some time, Joy continues to inspire her followers with her unique and adventurous approach to fashion.
