Nuremberg Airport Anniversary Bash Overwhelms City
On the 25th of May, Nuremberg Airport celebrated its 70th birthday, and boy, was it a bash! Tens of thousands of visitors descended upon the festival, and social media was flooded with opinions. But what did the organizers have to say about all the chaos?
Nuremberg - After a 70-year milestone, Nuremberg Airport was set to celebrate in style, just a few days later. However, it wasn't the rain that put a damper on the festivities. Instead, visitors took to social media to voice their discontent with the organization, leaving few kind words behind. But what's the beef with the organizers, you ask?
"Colossal Demand": 10,000 More Visitors Than Expected
"The airport festival was a massive success! The demand was colossal, and it was clear that the airport plays a vital role in the region," says Jan Beinßen, Nuremberg Airport spokesperson, in an exclusive interview with our team. With 30,000 attendees—10,000 more than expected—the celebration was off the charts! In previous festivals, "we never saw more than 20,000 visitors at any given time," says Beinßen. No one anticipated such a large turnout this year.

So, What's the Deal?
According to Jan Beinßen, there were three exciting reasons behind the record-breaking attendance: The festival benefited from the cooler weather, which likely encouraged more folks to attend. The long-awaited event following the coronavirus pandemic also contributed to the massive turnout. Lastly, the airport's offerings such as tours and exhibitions were a hit with visitors.
"Mayhem!" Crowd Causes Ruckus
"Not unexpected": The influx brought complications. Guests on social media documented the long lines, hours-long traffic jams, and food truck chaos. One Instagram user ranted, "3.5 hours in the parking lot, complete traffic jam, and no way out. An extra 100 kilometers driven for this mess!" Another shared their frustration, "We were also very angry. The shuttles failed, many food trucks were sold out by 3 pm... Everything was a mess!" "Madness - never again!" added a dissatisfied visitor.
"More Behind-the-Scenes Insights": Many Visitors Curious
"I thought it was lovely, but I would have liked more behind-the-scenes glimpses of the airport," wrote another visitor on Instagram. Specifically, they were interested in the baggage handling, airport fire department buildings, and the tower. Press spokesman Beinßen mentioned that apron tours were offered for a closer look at these areas, although visitors couldn't wander around due to security measures. The tours were in high demand and filled up quickly.
Traffic Gridlock around the Airport: Embrace Public Transport
"10,000 more visitors than expected—that's a big number. We're thrilled, but also sorry for those who faced issues," says press spokesman Beinßen. Recognizing the traffic problems, the drivers from car park P2 were eventually let through the barrier toll-free. Additionally, the airport fire brigade distributed drinks and sweets to keep waiting guests entertained on the upper parking decks.
In the aftermath of the celebration, the airport will convene with authorities to review the event. "The airport remains an airport, no four-lane highway is coming," says Beinßen. This means more emphasis on existing public transportation for future large events at Nuremberg Airport.
U2 Subway Stands Tall, But Buses Struggle
Despite the U2 subway line's resilience against switch failures, there were issues in bus traffic, reports Nuremberg Transport Authority (VAG). With the streets around the airport clogged with cars, buses were constantly re-routed, and two-lane roads were closed for bus traffic. As VAG press spokeswoman Elisabeth Seitzinger explains, a special train was deployed on the rails, allowing, "the subway to carry even more people."
