Over the past few decades, this writer has frequently visited Thuringia, and during their stay in Suhl this summer, they noted a distressing development: a significant change that seems irreversible is occurring in this town.

In the heart of summer 2021, a 53-year-old sociology professor from Montreal found herself reminiscing about her final days in the small town of Suhl, Thuringia. This was not her first encounter with the region, as she had previously worked there between 1998 and 2020, first in Erfurt and later in Suhl.

During her summer sojourn in 2021, the author was engaged as an "overland writer" by the Bauhaus University Weimar. This position was part of a larger initiative by the University of Leipzig, a project in which the author had been involved before. In the same summer, she also worked as a local reporter for the "Freies Wort" in Suhl.

The author's time in Suhl was not without its introspective moments. She pondered why she found herself drinking, despite no longer wanting to. This reflection, along with her overall experiences in Suhl, was shared in a publication or media outlet in July 2021.

Her work in Suhl was not just a standalone event in her professional journey. It was a continuation of a broader path, having been a sociology professor living in Montreal. Her reflections on her time in Suhl may have been influenced by her past experiences and her current perspective as a sociology professor.

The author's return to Thuringia as an overland writer in the summer of 2021 was not her first time working in the region. Previously, she had spent over two decades living and working in Thuringia, from 1998 to 2020. This return was part of a project by the University of Leipzig, a testament to her continued involvement with the university.

As the author looks back on her time in Suhl, it serves as a poignant reminder of her journey, both personal and professional, and the complexities that can arise even in the most ordinary of moments.
